Nundah, QLD

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Nundah is an established inner-northern suburb of Brisbane, straddling the busy Sandgate Road a few kilometres from the city centre. The district is the country of the Turrbal people, and its name is thought to come from a local Aboriginal word — recorded as 'nanda' — said to describe a chain of waterholes, a likely nod to the nearby Kedron Brook. Europeans arrived in 1838, when German Moravian missionaries founded a settlement that gave the area its long-used early name, 'German Station'. The coming of the railway in 1882 turned the farming village into a commuter suburb, and the station was renamed Nundah soon after it opened. Once a working-class quarter of timber cottages, Nundah has gentrified into a lively village of cafes and apartments.
