Allora, QLD

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Allora is a small town on the Darling Downs of southern Queensland, about 160 kilometres south-west of Brisbane in the Southern Downs region, on the country of the Giabal people. Its name is believed to come from an Aboriginal word, often given as 'gnarrallah', thought to mean a waterhole or swampy place. The town was surveyed in 1859 and grew amid the great pastoral runs of the Downs, with grand 1860s homesteads such as Talgai and Glengallan nearby. Allora keeps a well-preserved heritage main street and several nineteenth-century churches. A local curiosity is its link to P. L. Travers, the author of Mary Poppins, who lived here as a child; an old bank building is still known as the 'Mary Poppins house'.
