Ascot (Brisbane - Qld), QLD

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Ascot is a gracious north-eastern suburb of Brisbane, set on rising ground about six kilometres from the city centre and known for its grand old Queenslander homes. The area was originally home to the Turrbal people. In 1855 the pastoralist James Sutherland bought a large parcel of land here and built Windermere, a fine residence that survives as a heritage landmark. When the Eagle Farm Racecourse was laid out in 1863, the suburb was given the name Ascot as a tongue-in-cheek nod to the famous racecourse at Ascot in England, and racing has shaped its character ever since. Today more than a third of the suburb is given over to the Eagle Farm and Doomben racecourses, while the poinciana-lined Racecourse Road forms a handsome shopping strip. Bartleys Hill rises in the south-west.
