Hamilton (Qld), QLD
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Hamilton is a riverside suburb in the north-east of Brisbane, set along the north bank of the Brisbane River on the stretch known as Hamilton Reach. Its name comes from the old Hamilton Hotel — built by Gustavus Hamilton — which became such a landmark in the sparsely built early district that the whole area took its name. The hilly western part, rising to lookouts such as Toorak Hill, has long been prized residential land with sweeping views of the city, while Racecourse Road is a busy dining and shopping precinct. The flat riverfront to the south and east was once Brisbane's main port, lined with wharves; with shipping moved downriver, that land is being remade as the Northshore Hamilton precinct, earmarked to host the athletes' village for the 2032 Summer Olympics.
