Clayfield, QLD

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Clayfield is a leafy, established suburb in Brisbane's inner north, around seven kilometres by road from the city centre. Its name recalls the fine pale clay once dug nearby and fired in local brickworks, an industry known as the clay fields that helped spur the area's early growth. Laid out around the railway through the 1880s, Clayfield grew into a district of grand period homes, and today holds one of the larger collections of heritage-listed houses in inner-north Brisbane, among them gracious Queenslanders and Federation bungalows. The railway station at Eagle Junction remains a busy local landmark, and a tram once ran along Sandgate Road until the late 1960s. Along Alexandra Road, an arching canopy of poinciana and oak trees lends the streets a distinctive, almost New England character.
