Yeppoon, QLD
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Yeppoon is the main town of the Capricorn Coast in central Queensland, about 40 kilometres from Rockhampton. Its name comes from the Darumbal word yappun, recorded as meaning a place where the waters meet, and the town stands on the traditional lands of the Darumbal people, the recognised native title holders of this coast. Yeppoon looks out on the Keppel group of islands — some twenty-seven in all — with Great Keppel Island, ringed by white-sand beaches and coral, lying a short boat trip offshore. Along the mainland, a string of beaches, headlands and quiet coves has made the town a relaxed holiday and retirement spot, and the gateway for trips out to the islands.
