Yarraman (Qld), QLD

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Yarraman is a town in the Toowoomba Region of Queensland, about 181km northwest of Brisbane and 21km south of Nanango. The name 'yarraman' is an Australian word for horse, drawn from Port Jackson Pidgin English and possibly rooted in an Aboriginal word for 'large teeth'. Graziers and stockmen used the local creek for cattle from the 1870s, and a township grew late that decade; a provisional school opened in 1901 and a timber mill in 1910. The Brisbane Valley railway reached Yarraman in 1913 and closed in 1988. Timber, grain, beef and dairy support the district, with coal mined nearby at Meandu. The town is the northern terminus of the long Brisbane Valley Rail Trail.
