Newmarket is an established residential suburb in Brisbane's inner north-west, a short distance by road from the city centre. Originally known as the Three Mile Scrub, it gained its present name when the city's livestock saleyards were moved here around 1880; the area became known as the new market, and the name stuck. A railway station opened in 1899 after the line was extended from Mayne Junction, and the suburb filled with timber-and-tin Queenslander homes, many of which still stand among newer townhouses today. The historic Newmarket Hotel, established in 1897, anchors the shopping precinct on the corner of Newmarket Road and Enoggera Road. Enoggera Creek forms the southern boundary, where a linear park and bikeway follow the water, and several narrow laneways nearby, including one named Saleyards Lane, recall the suburb's stockyard beginnings.
