Nanango, QLD

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Nanango is one of the oldest towns in Queensland, set in the South Burnett region at the junction of the D'Aguilar and Burnett highways, about 190 kilometres north-west of Brisbane and roughly 24 kilometres south-east of Kingaroy. The Wakka Wakka people are the original inhabitants, and the name is generally said to derive from a Wakka Wakka word, nunangi, though its exact meaning is unclear. A roadside inn opened here in 1848, a post office followed in 1852, and the town was surveyed in 1861; gold was found at the nearby Seven Mile Diggings in 1867. The grand Ringsfield House of 1908 and the heritage court house recall that early prosperity, while the Tarong Power Station shaped later growth. Beef, dairy, timber and farming anchor the district.
