Mundubbera, QLD

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Mundubbera is a citrus town on the Burnett River in Queensland's North Burnett, roughly 360km north-west of Brisbane and 184km west of Bundaberg. The name comes from an 1848 pastoral run and is believed to be an Aboriginal word, possibly from the Kabi language, variously said to mean 'sharp ridges', steps cut in a tree, or a meeting place of the waters where the Burnett, Auburn and Boyne rivers join; the Gureng Gureng and Wakka Wakka groups are associated with the district. A town reserve was set aside in 1861 and the railway reached town in 1914. Famous for mandarins and citrus, the district celebrates its produce with the roadside Big Mandarin, while Auburn River National Park lies nearby.
