Mowbray (Tas.), TAS
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Mowbray is a suburb of Launceston, in northern Tasmania, best known as the home of Mowbray Racecourse, where the Launceston Cup has been run since the early days of colonial racing. The suburb sits on a flat-topped alluvial shelf, once called Paint Mine Hill, rising above the Tamar River and its flood plains. Its name was borrowed from an early homestead owned by Martin Mowbray Stephenson, on land now occupied by Launceston Church Grammar School; the name itself traces back to Normandy and is said to mean 'mud hill'. Racing meetings were held at the course from as early as 1830. Suburban development began in earnest in the late nineteenth century, and after the First World War new streets were laid out and named for allied soldiers and commanders, among them Haig Street.
