Invermay (Tas.), TAS

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Invermay is a residential and cultural suburb of Launceston, lying just north of the city centre on low-lying ground between the Tamar River and the North Esk River, which form much of its boundary. Gazetted as a locality in 1863, it was proclaimed a town in 1896 and absorbed into Greater Launceston in 1907. The suburb is best known as the home of York Park — the University of Tasmania Stadium — northern Tasmania's main venue for Australian rules football. It also takes in the smaller pocket of Inveresk, whose former railway yards have been transformed into a thriving cultural precinct housing the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, a university campus, and a tramway museum. Riverbend Park, a much-loved adventure playground beside the river, was voted Tasmania's favourite playground in 2021.
