Avoca (Tas.), TAS
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Avoca is a small village in the Northern Midlands of Tasmania, set where the St Paul's River meets the South Esk, about 81 kilometres south-east of Launceston. The district was first surveyed in 1833 by John Helder Wedge, who named it St Paul's Plains; it was renamed Avoca in 1837. Settlers took up farms from the early 1830s, and the village grew as a farming centre that also worked nearby coal and tin. Several early buildings still stand, among them the convict-era Union Hotel of 1842 and a stone bridge over the St Paul's River. Its best-known landmark is St Thomas Anglican Church, completed in 1842 to a design by the colonial architect James Blackburn. Today Avoca serves mainly the surrounding farms.
