Berriedale, TAS

Berriedale is a riverside suburb in the northern part of Hobart, within the City of Glenorchy, sitting on the banks of the River Derwent between Chigwell and Rosetta, about fifteen kilometres from the city centre. It is best known today as the home of the Museum of Old and New Art, or MONA — an internationally acclaimed gallery of subterranean spaces and landscaped grounds that, with the adjoining Moorilla Estate winery, has become one of Tasmania's defining cultural and tourist destinations. The winery began in 1947, when the Italian immigrant Claudio Alcorso established Moorilla Estate and turned it into a hub for the arts; in 1995 the site was bought by David Walsh, who expanded it into MONA, which opened in 2011 and now hosts festivals such as Dark Mofo. The suburb's name is older still, believed to come from the Berriedale Inn, opened in 1834 as a social hub for travellers. Its homes are mostly mid-twentieth-century, reflecting Tasmania's post-war growth.
