Moura, QLD

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Moura is a rural town in the Shire of Banana in Central Queensland, on the Dawson River roughly 65km west of Biloela and 171km south-west of Rockhampton. Its name is variously attributed to Moura in Portugal — where an early run-holder had served during the Peninsular War — or to an Aboriginal word said to mean 'native camp dog'. A pastoral lease carried the name from 1854, and the town grew as a farming centre from the 1930s, gaining a school and post office by 1940. Coal mining, beef, cotton and cereals drive the district today. The town remembers three underground mine explosions between 1975 and 1994 with a Miners Memorial, and fills its calendar with the Coal and Country Festival each August.
