Millaa Millaa, QLD

Millaa Millaa is a small town on the Atherton Tableland in Far North Queensland, about 60 kilometres west of Innisfail and 98 kilometres south-west of Cairns. Its name is said to come from a Yidinji word for a local fruiting plant. The district opened to closer settlement early in the twentieth century — the school dates from 1918 and the post office from 1919 — and dairying, supported by a butter factory from 1930, became the mainstay of the high-rainfall plateau. Millaa Millaa is best known today for its waterfalls: the much-photographed Millaa Millaa Falls and the nearby Zillie and Ellinjaa Falls form a popular 17-kilometre waterfall circuit. A lookout near the town gives wide views over the surrounding ranges.
