Kumbia, QLD
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Kumbia is a rural town in the South Burnett region of Queensland, about 22 kilometres south-west of Kingaroy and 222 kilometres north-west of Brisbane. Its name comes from the Waka language, with an uncertain meaning, possibly referring to white ant nests or a small scrub vine. The Queensland Government auctioned the first town blocks in 1912, a state school opened in 1914, and a post office followed in 1915. Grazing and farming have long shaped the district on the surrounding plains. The town's best-known building is the Memorial School of Arts hall, opened in 1922 as a World War I memorial, which drew a crowd of more than a thousand people. Kumbia sits on the Bunya Highway, its main street known locally as Bell Street.
