Killarney (Qld), QLD
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Killarney is a small town on the Condamine River in Queensland's Southern Downs, about 35 kilometres south-east of Warwick and close to the New South Wales border. It lies within the Gidhabal language region and near the northern country of the Yetimarala people. The district's name was chosen by the Hon. Peter Murray, who, visiting nearby Canning Downs station, thought the green scenery resembled Killarney in County Kerry, Ireland. Once part of the Canning Downs run taken up in 1840, the South Killarney town site was surveyed in 1878, and the community grew on dairying and forestry. The surrounding ranges are dotted with waterfalls, among them Queen Mary, Daggs, Teviot and Browns Falls, with Main Range National Park close by.
