Hughenden, QLD

Hughenden is an outback town in north-west Queensland, on the Flinders River about 380 kilometres west-south-west of Townsville. The country has been home to the Yirandhali people for many thousands of years. Curiously, the town takes its name from Hughenden Manor in Buckinghamshire, England, the home of the British prime minister Benjamin Disraeli, with which the early settlers had a family connection. A sheep station was established here in 1863, the township was surveyed in 1877, and the railway later pushed through on its way west. Cattle and sheep, grazing the open Flinders grass plains, remain the backbone of the district. Hughenden is best known today for its dinosaurs, and the Flinders Discovery Centre displays a full-size replica of Muttaburrasaurus, unearthed in the region.
