Gayndah, QLD
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Gayndah lies on the Burnett River in the North Burnett region of Queensland, about 150 kilometres south-west of Bundaberg and 325 kilometres north-west of Brisbane. The town sits within the Wakka Wakka language region, and while the name is clearly of Aboriginal origin its exact meaning is unclear, with suggestions ranging from thunder to bushy land. Established in 1849, Gayndah is often described as one of the oldest officially gazetted towns in Queensland, its post office dating to 1850. The surrounding district became the centre of Queensland's largest citrus-growing area, a heritage celebrated by the towering Big Orange and the biennial Orange Festival. Heritage-listed buildings, including the courthouse and state school, line a quiet country town that trades heavily on its long history.
