Coominya, QLD

Coominya is a rural town in the Somerset region of South East Queensland, about 84 kilometres west-northwest of Brisbane and 46 kilometres north-west of Ipswich. The name is believed to come from the Yuggera language, from words meaning 'to see water', after the area's lagoons. The district was known as Bellevue from 1886 until 1906, and the Brisbane Valley railway once ran through it before closing in 1993. Today Coominya is known for its fresh produce, with an abattoir the main employer and olive groves supplying a local olive-leaf extract plant. Its best-known landmark is the heritage-listed Bellevue Homestead, relocated from the Wivenhoe Dam site, and a former wartime airfield west of town is now a flight-training school.
