Yarrawonga (Vic.), VIC

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Yarrawonga lies on the south bank of the Murray River in northern Victoria, about 264km north-east of Melbourne and joined to its twin town Mulwala in New South Wales. The name comes from an Aboriginal term variously said to mean 'cormorant's nesting place' or to combine words for waterfalls and pigeon; the Mulla Walla people occupied the area before European settlement around 1842. The village was founded in 1868, gained a post office and courthouse in 1874, and was linked by rail to Melbourne in 1886. Damming the Murray in the late 1930s created Lake Mulwala, which now anchors a busy scene of boating, fishing and lakeside holidays.
