Armadale (Vic.), VIC
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Armadale is a prosperous inner suburb of Melbourne, about seven kilometres south-east of the city centre in the City of Stonnington. It takes its name from Armadale in the Scottish Highlands, the birthplace of a nineteenth-century Premier of Victoria who settled in the district. Long regarded as one of Melbourne's blue-chip addresses, it is known above all for High Street, a strip lined with antique dealers, galleries and high-end boutiques, among them the ornate Victorian shopping arcade Kings Arcade, built in 1893. Grand Italianate mansions and rows of Victorian and Federation houses fill its leafy streets, the legacy of building booms from the 1870s onward. The suburb is also home to several of the city's well-known private schools and to a scatter of small parks.
