Malvern (Vic.), VIC
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Malvern is an established inner south-eastern suburb of Melbourne, around eight kilometres from the city centre within the City of Stonnington. The wider area is the traditional country of the Kulin nation, with the Boonwurrung and Wurundjeri peoples connected to land on either side of Gardiners Creek; the name Koornang, applied nearby, is said to mean rising ground. Europeans settled from the 1830s, when John Gardiner made his home in the district. Malvern is the original home of Malvern Star, once the country's best known bicycle maker, whose riders included the champion cyclist Hubert Opperman. Today Glenferrie Road anchors the shopping and dining, lined with boutiques and restaurants, while the Second Empire town hall remains a landmark. Former prime minister Robert Menzies, athlete John Landy and swimmer Mack Horton are among its residents.
