Yarram, VIC

Yarram is a town in south-east Gippsland, Victoria, about 220 kilometres east of Melbourne and 59 kilometres south of Traralgon, in the Shire of Wellington. The Brataualung people of the Gunaikurnai are the traditional custodians of the surrounding land, and the name — from 'Yarram Yarram' — is thought to mean 'plenty of water', though the source language is not recorded. A short-lived Scottish settlement experiment began here in 1841, and a post office opened in 1861; the railway operated from 1921 to 1987. Close to the historic port of Port Albert and the Ninety Mile Beach, Yarram serves a dairy and timber district and is known for its heritage Regent Theatre on the main street.
