Wedderburn (Vic.), VIC

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Wedderburn is a former gold town in north-central Victoria, on the Calder Highway about 217km north-west of Melbourne and 75km north-west of Bendigo, in the Shire of Loddon. A gold rush began here in 1852, and the settlement was known as Korong until 1858; the post office opened in 1856, the town took the name Wedderburn in 1858, and the railway arrived in 1883. Farming sustains the district today, while the goldfields past is kept alive at the Hard Hill Reserve, with its replica diggings, and at Soldiers Memorial Park. The town is a favourite with fossickers, who gather each year for the Detector Jamboree, a festival devoted to metal detecting and gold-hunting.
