Warragul, VIC

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Warragul is a town in the West Gippsland region of Victoria, about 100 kilometres south-east of Melbourne in the Shire of Baw Baw, set between the Strzelecki Ranges to the south and the foothills of Mount Baw Baw to the north. It lies on the traditional land of the Gunai/Kurnai people, close to where their country meets that of the Boonwurrung. The name is generally said to come from an Aboriginal word meaning 'wild dog' or dingo, recorded by early settlers and by the botanist Daniel Bunce in 1851. The surrounding country is rich dairying and gourmet-food land, and the town hosts the annual Gippsland Field Days at nearby Lardner Park.
