Warialda, NSW
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Warialda sits in the North West Slopes of New South Wales, in Gwydir Shire on the road between Inverell and Moree, with the Weraerai people recorded as the original inhabitants of the district. Gazetted in 1847, it was the first town in the North West Slopes region, and a border police outpost had been established here a few years earlier. Today it serves as a centre for the surrounding wheat, sorghum and grazing country. A short drive away, Cranky Rock Nature Reserve is a popular picnic and bushwalking spot set among dramatic granite boulders. Warialda is also remembered as the birthplace of Sister Elizabeth Kenny, the nurse who became a world-renowned pioneer in the treatment of polio.
