Artarmon, NSW
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Artarmon is a leafy, established suburb on Sydney's lower North Shore, within the City of Willoughby and a short distance north-west of the city centre. Its name dates from 1810, when William Gore, the provost marshal under Governor Bligh, received a land grant here and named the property after his family estate in Ireland; the rise known as Gore Hill commemorates him. The Gothic-style Chatswood South Uniting Church, built in 1871 on the Pacific Highway, survives from the suburb's early days, along with a small pioneer cemetery beside it. Houses sit east of the railway line while taller buildings and a long-standing industrial pocket lie to the west, yet the suburb keeps a green feel. A row of shops and cafes lines Hampden Road by the station, and several television studios are based locally.
