Triabunna, TAS

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Triabunna sits on Tasmania's east coast at Spring Bay, sheltered where MacCleans Creek meets the sea, about 86 kilometres north-east of Hobart and a little north of Orford. Its name is said to come from an Aboriginal Tasmanian word for the native hen, the stocky flightless bird of the island's paddocks and wetlands. The town began in 1830 as a military post and soon supported a cluster of shore-based whaling stations around the bay. Today it is the civic heart of the Glamorgan Spring Bay district and a working fishing port, best known to travellers as the embarkation point for the ferry across to Maria Island National Park, which lies just offshore.
