Timboon, VIC
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Timboon is a town in the Western District of Victoria, about 213 kilometres south-west of Melbourne, 53 kilometres east of Warrnambool and 17 kilometres north of Port Campbell, in the Shire of Corangamite. Before European settlement the area was home to people of the Girawurung language group, and the town's name is believed to come from the Aboriginal word 'timboun', describing a type of rock used to open mussels. Daniel Curdie explored the local river, later named after him, in 1845, and the township took shape from the late 1870s, with the railway completed in 1892 and closed in 1986. Dairying and forestry sustain the district. Today the old railway goods shed houses the Timboon Railway Shed Distillery, and the Camperdown-Timboon Rail Trail follows the former line.
