Snug, TAS

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Snug is a small Channel town about 30 kilometres south of Hobart, strung along the Channel Highway on the shore of the D'Entrecasteaux Channel with views across to Bruny Island. It lies within the traditional Country of the Nuenonne people of the Channel and Bruny Island. The Snug River was named for the sheltered, 'snug' nature of its inlet, and a settlement grew here from the 1840s around timber mills on North-West Bay. On Black Tuesday in 1967 catastrophic bushfires swept the district and destroyed most of the town's buildings; a memorial now marks its recovery. Today Snug is a quiet residential and holiday spot, best known for the forest walk to Snug Falls, the sheltered swimming at Snug Beach and the blue-gum hills of the Snug Tiers.
