Scottsdale is the main town of north-eastern Tasmania, set in green farming country between the Sidling Range and the coast. Selectors took up the rich volcanic soils from the 1850s, and the town, first known as Ellesmere, was renamed Scottsdale in 1893 after James Reid Scott, the surveyor who had reported on the district's fertile land and mild climate. Farming, dairying and forestry have long been its mainstays. The surrounding district is now a draw for visitors, best known for the Bridestowe Lavender Estate, whose rows of lavender flower each summer, and for the Barnbougle golf links on the coast nearby. The town itself serves the farms and forests of the north-east.
