Rylstone, NSW

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Rylstone is a town on the Central Tablelands of New South Wales, about 241 kilometres north-west of Sydney and 54 kilometres south-east of Mudgee, in the Mid-Western Regional Council. The Dabee people of the Wiradjuri nation are the traditional owners. The town's name has no single agreed origin: it may be an Irish settler's mishearing of 'Royal Stone', a Scottish term, or a name Governor Gipps chose instead of the locally requested 'Tong Bong'. Surveyed in 1846, the town gained a post office in 1849 and was proclaimed in 1885, a year after the railway arrived. Wool, sheep, cattle, grapes and olives shape the district, with coal and cement works at nearby Kandos. Among its heritage buildings are the 1870 courthouse and the Globe Hotel.
