Rokeby (Tas.), TAS
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Rokeby is a suburb on the eastern shore of the River Derwent, across the water from central Hobart and within the City of Clarence. It began in the nineteenth century as Rokeby House, a farmhouse in the district then known as Clarence Plains. The Clarence Plains Post Office opened in 1850 and was renamed Rokeby in 1882. In the 1970s the area was developed largely as a public-housing suburb, planned along lines drawn from housing projects in the United States. Rokeby keeps a number of older features, among them a historic church and a traditional cricket ground ringed by a British-style picket fence, linked by the Rokeby Historic Trail. Its well-regarded skate park, built around 2001, has hosted competition skating, and the suburb is also home to the Tasmania Police Academy.
