Quirindi, NSW

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Quirindi is a country town on the Liverpool Plains in the North West Slopes of New South Wales, about 68 kilometres south-west of Tamworth in the Liverpool Plains Shire. The Gamilaraay (Kamilaroi) people lived across these plains for many thousands of years, and the town's name comes from their language, variously translated as 'nest in the hills' or 'place where fish breed'. A post office opened in 1858 and the town was gazetted in 1884. Quirindi sits amid some of the richest farming country in the state — broadacre cropping on the deep black soils to the west, and grazing in the hills to the east — and marks its rural roots each May with a Rural Heritage Festival.
