Nyngan, NSW

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Nyngan is a town in the Orana region of central-western New South Wales, on the Bogan River where the Mitchell and Barrier highways meet, about 580 kilometres north-west of Sydney. The district is the country of the Wangaibon people, and the name was recorded by the explorer Thomas Mitchell in 1835 as nyingan, said to mean 'long pond of water', though other meanings such as mussel or crayfish have also been suggested. In April 1990 the Bogan River broke its banks and flooded the town, forcing residents to be evacuated by helicopter. Today Nyngan is a wool and wheat centre, and in 2016 one of Australia's largest solar power stations opened on its outskirts.
