Nungarin, WA

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Nungarin is a small town in the north-eastern Wheatbelt of Western Australia, about 278km east of Perth and 39km north of Merredin. The townsite reserve was set aside in 1910 and the town gazetted in 1912 as the surrounding land was opened for wheat farming, which remains the mainstay today, served by a CBH grain receival site. Nungarin's most unusual chapter came during the Second World War, when the army established the 5 Base Ordnance Depot here, a major store and workshop well inland from the coast. The old camp now houses the Nungarin Heritage Machinery and Army Museum, whose collection of military vehicles and farm machinery is the town's best-known attraction.
