Armadale (WA), WA
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Armadale sits on the south-eastern edge of the Perth metropolitan area, at the foot of the Darling Range, and serves as the centre of the City of Armadale. The surrounding country was long occupied by the Noongar people, whose enduring connection is honoured at a dedicated Aboriginal interpretation centre near Champion Lakes. The neighbouring township of Kelmscott was gazetted in 1830, and from about 1853 a wayside inn — the Neerigin Inn — served travellers where the roads to Albany and Pinjarra met, so the district was long known as Neerigin or Narrogin. The name Armadale only came into use after the railway reached the area in 1889; by one account it was chosen to avoid confusion with the wheatbelt town of Narrogin. The major junction of the Albany and South Western Highways still anchors the suburb. An ancient jarrah tree, believed to be many centuries old, survives in the town centre as a living link to the land before the Swan River Colony.
