Newdegate, WA

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Newdegate is a small town in the eastern wheatbelt of Western Australia, in the Shire of Lake Grace, about 400 kilometres south-east of Perth. It was named after Sir Francis Newdegate, Governor of Western Australia from 1920 to 1924, and its townsite was gazetted in 1925 as the surrounding mallee country was opened for wheat and sheep farming. The Wagin to Newdegate railway was completed in 1926, and grain handling, marked today by the local CBH receival site, became central to the economy. Newdegate is best known across the state for the Newdegate Machinery Field Days, a large agricultural and machinery expo held each year. It remains a close-knit farming community surrounded by grain country and nature reserves.
