Mullewa, WA
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Mullewa is a small town in the Mid West of Western Australia, about 450 kilometres north of Perth and 98 kilometres east-north-east of the coastal city of Geraldton. The town takes its name from nearby Mullewa Spring, an Aboriginal name recorded by the surveyor John Forrest in 1873; its meaning is uncertain, though it is most often said to mean place of fog. Pastoralists settled the district from 1869, and the town was gazetted in 1894 when a narrow-gauge railway arrived from Geraldton. Wheat farming sustains the area today, with a grain receival point in town. Mullewa is celebrated for its spring wildflowers, including the rare wreath flower, and for the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, built in 1927 by the architect-priest Monsignor John Hawes.
