Mortlake (Vic.), VIC
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Mortlake is a town in Victoria's Western District, about 234km west of Melbourne and 50km north-east of Warrnambool, sitting at the foot of Mount Shadwell, a dormant volcano. The formally recognised traditional owners of the area are the Eastern Maar people. The surveyor Thomas Mitchell named Mount Shadwell during his 1836-37 expedition; the first settlers arrived around 1839, the town was surveyed in 1853 and the post office opened in 1859. Wool and dairying built the district, and bluestone buildings from the 1850s still line the streets. An Avenue of Honour of 192 cypress trees, planted in 1920, and the basalt cone of Mount Shadwell are local landmarks.
