Mornington (Vic.), VIC

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Mornington is a seaside town on the Mornington Peninsula, about 46 kilometres south-east of Melbourne and looking out over Port Phillip. It was originally home to the Boonwurrung people and was first known to settlers as Schnapper Point, before being renamed in 1864 after an English earl. The old pier, opened in 1858, still reaches from the foreshore below Schnapper Point, where the yacht club stands today. Now part of Melbourne's favourite stretch of summer coast, Mornington pairs calm bay beaches and a busy main street of shops and cafes with the cool-climate vineyards for which the surrounding peninsula is well known.
