Mole Creek, TAS
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Mole Creek is a small town in the north of Tasmania, in the upper Mersey Valley about 76 kilometres west of Launceston. The surrounding limestone country is honeycombed with hundreds of caves and sinkholes, and was home to the Pallittorre people, who mined ochre at the nearby Toolumbunner pits. The town takes its name from the creek itself, which runs above ground before vanishing into the cave system and rising again further on. Settlers came through from the 1820s, and by the early twentieth century the show caves had been opened to visitors and commercial honey production had begun. Today Mole Creek is known for its leatherwood honey, for the Marakoopa and King Solomons show caves of the Mole Creek Karst National Park, and for the nearby Trowunna Wildlife Park.
