Mirboo North, VIC

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Mirboo North is a town in the South Gippsland hills of Victoria, set in the Strzelecki Ranges about 155 kilometres south-east of Melbourne, 35 kilometres from Morwell and 25 kilometres from Leongatha. Timber getters were drawn to its mountain ash forests in the late 1870s, and a railway branch line climbed up from Morwell, completed in 1886 and worked until 1974; building it took massive embankments and many bridges through the steep country. Several early settlements were tried before the town settled around the railway station. The old line is now the Grand Ridge Rail Trail, a 13-kilometre path through temperate rainforest, and the scenic Grand Ridge Road passes through. The town is known for its Italian Festa, which can draw tens of thousands of visitors.
