Metung, VIC

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Metung is a small village in East Gippsland, Victoria, set on a narrow peninsula between Lake King and Bancroft Bay on the Gippsland Lakes, about 314 kilometres east of Melbourne. The district lies on the country of the Gunai/Kurnai people. Today Metung is chiefly a holiday and boating destination: its sheltered waters, marina and waterfront wharf draw yachts and cruisers, and the village supports a golf club, hotel and a cluster of cafes and galleries. Surrounded on three sides by water, it has a relaxed maritime character, and the lakes system on which it sits is among the largest networks of inland waterways in Australia.
