Mentone, VIC

Mentone is a bayside suburb in Melbourne's south-east, about twenty-one kilometres from the city centre and part of the City of Kingston. It is best known locally for Mentone Beach, which runs along Beaumaris Bay beneath low cliffs. The suburb was laid out in the late nineteenth century as a seaside resort and took its name from the Italian spelling of Menton, the resort town on the French Riviera; to carry the theme, several of its streets were named after Italian cities — Cremona, Florence, Venice, Milan and Naples among them. Mentone also has a place in Australian art history: Tom Roberts and Frederick McCubbin were painting on the beach here in the summer of 1886–87 when they fell in with a young Arthur Streeton, and the group became known as the Heidelberg School. Its railway station sits on the Frankston line.
