Maydena, TAS
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Maydena is a small town in the Derwent Valley of southern Tasmania, on the River Tyenna about 87 kilometres west of Hobart, close to Mount Field National Park and Russell Falls. Once known as Junee, it began as a base for the osmiridium miners of nearby Adamsfield in the early twentieth century. The town grew again between 1947 and 1950, when Australian Newsprint Mills built around a hundred houses for forestry workers, and a railway long hauled timber and ore down the valley. In recent years Maydena has reinvented itself around the Maydena Bike Park, a large gravity mountain-bike park opened in 2018 that has become one of the town's biggest employers and a major draw for visitors. The surrounding rainforest and caves add to its appeal.
