Marong, VIC
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Marong is a small town in central Victoria, about 17 kilometres west of Bendigo and 157 kilometres north-west of Melbourne, where the Calder Highway meets the Calder Alternative Highway. Its name is said to come from a Djadjawurrung word for the Murray pine that grows across the district. A post office opened in 1860 and the Marong road district was proclaimed the same year, becoming a shire in 1864 before being absorbed into the City of Greater Bendigo in 1994. Today it is a quiet rural community with a primary school, a hotel, a golf club, a swimming pool and its own Australian-rules football team, the Marong Panthers.
