Mansfield (Vic.), VIC

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Mansfield is a town in the foothills of the Victorian Alps, on the Delatite River about 180 kilometres north-east of Melbourne. The area is the traditional country of the Yowengillum clan of the Taungurung people. Europeans first scouted the district in 1839, and the Mount Battery pastoral station was established the following year. The town was surveyed in 1851 and named after Mansfield in Nottinghamshire, England, with a post office opening on the first day of 1858. Today Mansfield is best known as the main service town for the Mount Buller alpine resort, one of Victoria's largest ski fields. The surrounding high country is also associated with the legend of The Man from Snowy River.
